Juan Villa gathered his team before the game and told his players they needed to find some swagger.
A visit to Stockton to face the Weston Ranch Ravens seemed to do the trick.
Jordan Letu threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Vince Cuellar, and the Patterson Redskins varsity youth football team won its second game of the season, 7-6, on Saturday, Oct. 17.
“The defense and offense dominated,” Villa said. “The kids are playing really well — and to their potential.”
While victories have been few and far between for the Redskins this season, Villa said he remains proud of his players.
“This win was all about the kids on this team,” he said.
Junior varsityFor a while — almost a quarter, in fact — the junior varsity Redskins matched Weston Ranch blow for blow and threatened to make the outing competitive.
But blown assignments, missed opportunities and a handful of key moments sent Patterson home with a 54-0 loss.
“It’s been an uphill battle all year,” Patterson coach Eric Ochoa said. “Our goal right now is to put some points up on the board.
“That would be a big achievement for this team.”
Despite another crushing defeat, Ochoa added that his team continues to play hard on every down.
“I don’t think that there is another team (in this predicament) that plays with as much heart as we do,” Ochoa said. “This team never gives up.
“We’re young and we’re small, but we’re learning. We’re learning and we’re getting better at every position.”
