The Patterson Ravens varsity youth football team hopes to clinch a postseason appearance in its inaugural season when it hosts the Gustine Redskins on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Patterson is coming off its second consecutive win after defeating the West Side Niners 42-28 on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Orestimba High in Newman.

The win improved the Ravens’ record to 5-3.

“The players are starting to understand their roles a lot better at this point of the season,” Patterson coach Keith Parker said.

Brandon Williams scored a pair of touchdowns — including a 1-yard run to cap off an 80-yard fourth quarter drive — to lead the Ravens to victory.

Patterson’s Avion Warnsley added a 57-yard catch-and-run score, while Malik Smith tacked on a 6-yard touchdown grab on a pass from quarterback Jonathan Perez.

Jacob Gomez rounded out the Ravens’ scoring as he scooped up a West Side fumble and returned it for a touchdown.

“We got to put in a lot of different players,” Parker said. “Everyone got some playing time.”

Parker says his team is starting to fire on all cylinders at just the right time.

“Earlier in the season, we might have fallen apart late in the game,” he said. “The leaders on this team are also starting to know their roles, and they’re executing when we need them to.”

The junior varsity Ravens are already assured of a playoff berth.

Still, Patterson’s convincing 45-7 victory over the Niners went a long way in setting the tone for the postseason.

“(The Niners) invited us to play in their homecoming game,” Patterson coach Read Weinzheimer said. “I don’t think they’ll be doing that again next season.”

The Ravens’ Demario Hammond returned the game’s opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown. Teammates Ruben Rosas and Damian Paulo added a score apiece. And Jonathan Weathered punched in his first TD of the season on a 6-yard carry.

Defensively, Michael Lawson (four tackles, interception), Daniel Cota (interception) and Hunter Powers (four sacks) all garnered praise from their coach.

The Ravens (7-1) will likely face West Side again in two weeks, when the Trans Valley Youth Football League’s playoffs get started.

“This was a solid win for us on many levels,” Weinzheimer said. “If nothing else, this also gives us a bit of a psychological advantage when we meet again.”

• Results for other Ravens teams were not submitted by press time.

WSN

Your wasting your time, remember why they were started. Hopefully their superiority complex will be their downfall.

And the Ravens did beat the ws novice,as did the jv.Surprised,hardly.Ready,definately.As I recall that was at your home field, where most kids play much better than when they have to travel. Both our novice and jv won their last games, how did your boys do?Of course the raven novice did beat delhi by more than one point.Make sure you add that to your useless facts to determine a winner.Don't forget to add points scored for and against, weather conditions, price of gas and interest rates.Exactly,it all means nothing.Of course your people were at our last game, that should give you quite the advantage.Want to spot us some points?

There is never no guarantee, but WS did win Gustine (novice) and Ravens just barely won, so I would let that speak for itself and the JV squad just might be suprised,

(Should be fun)

I agree, I don't know why you would even make this comment. My issue started with a comment that was made from a coach. You are right, maybe he might have said the same thing if things were the other way around, but why even say anything?? Especially when things WILL be different this time around with both levels. Also, I'm not sure what sign you are talking about, because the only sign I saw was "welcome ravens", but I guess you forgot to mention that....Have a great day....

I'm speaking of the JV Comments not Jr Novice. So I dont know who your comment was centered to.

I COMPLETELY agree w/ WSN, Our boys are out there to PLAY a game, its all in fun.

I am sure our 10-12yr old boys if knowing what this coach said will take it as an insult, for what is to be a good game next weekend.

I as a parent of a WSN take it a little different then a winning team, you shake hands & say good game, not make comments like that.

“(The Niners) invited us to play in their homecoming game,” Patterson coach Read Weinzheimer said. “I don’t think they’ll be doing that again next season.” Its a game Coach, Win or Lose its FUN for these boys. So theyre suppose to be scared of the Ravens now?

If the score was the other way around he would say the same thing about your team having that advantage.Again no big deal and certainly not an insult.Yes our coaches prepared well for that game,as they do for every team.Maybe a little more for westside since they have played mostly the same teams and had the same record. If I know them they have moved on from that game and concentrating on next game. They will be ready for the next time they play you but not before they take care of their next 2 games.Knowing how they treat my son and his team mates I know they would not disrespect another team or their kids.Like I said no big deal see you guys in 3 weeks for what should be a good game.

No, I'm saying that with each game the kids are able to improve and be able to prepare for the next week. I just didn't like his comments about psychological advantage. I was at the game on Saturday and saw what happened. The niners know they will have to face them again and will be better prepared. The kids are out there to have fun and shouldn't have to worry about some coach playing mind games. That's all. Thank you

Are you saying they were not ready this time?Do not make a mountain out of a molehill.

Im not sure what type of psychological advantage this coach thinks he is going to have. On any given day, any team can get beaten. I know WS is definetly going to be prepared the next time these two meet.....until then coach- think what you want.
