The Patterson Ravens varsity youth football team hopes to clinch a postseason appearance in its inaugural season when it hosts the Gustine Redskins on Sunday, Oct. 18.
Patterson is coming off its second consecutive win after defeating the West Side Niners 42-28 on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Orestimba High in Newman.
The win improved the Ravens’ record to 5-3.
“The players are starting to understand their roles a lot better at this point of the season,” Patterson coach Keith Parker said.
Brandon Williams scored a pair of touchdowns — including a 1-yard run to cap off an 80-yard fourth quarter drive — to lead the Ravens to victory.
Patterson’s Avion Warnsley added a 57-yard catch-and-run score, while Malik Smith tacked on a 6-yard touchdown grab on a pass from quarterback Jonathan Perez.
Jacob Gomez rounded out the Ravens’ scoring as he scooped up a West Side fumble and returned it for a touchdown.
“We got to put in a lot of different players,” Parker said. “Everyone got some playing time.”
Parker says his team is starting to fire on all cylinders at just the right time.
“Earlier in the season, we might have fallen apart late in the game,” he said. “The leaders on this team are also starting to know their roles, and they’re executing when we need them to.”
The junior varsity Ravens are already assured of a playoff berth.
Still, Patterson’s convincing 45-7 victory over the Niners went a long way in setting the tone for the postseason.
“(The Niners) invited us to play in their homecoming game,” Patterson coach Read Weinzheimer said. “I don’t think they’ll be doing that again next season.”
The Ravens’ Demario Hammond returned the game’s opening kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown. Teammates Ruben Rosas and Damian Paulo added a score apiece. And Jonathan Weathered punched in his first TD of the season on a 6-yard carry.
Defensively, Michael Lawson (four tackles, interception), Daniel Cota (interception) and Hunter Powers (four sacks) all garnered praise from their coach.
The Ravens (7-1) will likely face West Side again in two weeks, when the Trans Valley Youth Football League’s playoffs get started.
“This was a solid win for us on many levels,” Weinzheimer said. “If nothing else, this also gives us a bit of a psychological advantage when we meet again.”

Your wasting your time, remember why they were started. Hopefully their superiority complex will be their downfall.
(Should be fun)
I am sure our 10-12yr old boys if knowing what this coach said will take it as an insult, for what is to be a good game next weekend.
I as a parent of a WSN take it a little different then a winning team, you shake hands & say good game, not make comments like that.
“(The Niners) invited us to play in their homecoming game,” Patterson coach Read Weinzheimer said. “I don’t think they’ll be doing that again next season.” Its a game Coach, Win or Lose its FUN for these boys. So theyre suppose to be scared of the Ravens now?
