Izabella Cruz and Alex Delguidice saved their most meaningful rounds of golf for the Valley Foothill League South tournament Oct. 20 at Pheasant Run Golf Course in Chowchilla.

And the duo — the undisputed leaders of the Patterson High girls golf team — has something to show for it. As top individual finishers, both secured dates at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V subsection tournament Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Stevinson Ranch Golf Course.

Subsection results were not available at press time.

Cruz carded a team-best 106, and Delguidice shot a 121 at the league tournament.

“Izabella’s 106 was the top score among qualifiers,” Oliveira said. “And I cannot be more proud of Alex and how far she’s come since her sophomore year (her first season), to now.”

The par-72 Pheasant Run course — which sets up a lot like Stevinson Ranch, according to Oliveira — boasts wide fairways and plenty of water hazards. The Tigers played conservatively at the league tourney, earning a fifth-place team finish with a score of 506.

“We did very well (as a team),” Oliveira said.

Central Catholic claimed the VFLS title with a score of 396. Livingston (422), Hilmar (436) and Modesto Christian (499) rounded out the top four teams.

Patterson’s Sarah Marty (139) and Kelsey Allen (143) chipped in solid performances, Oliveira said.

“Sarah and Kelsey are to be commended for all of their hard work and dedication to the game of golf,” Oliveira said. “They both were consistent — at least as consistent as first-time golfers can be — and each showed great growth as the year progressed.”

Now, the focus will remain on Cruz and Delguidice.

Cruz earned all-league honors at last week’s tournament, posting the fifth-best scoring average in the VFLS at 51 per nine holes.

“(Cruz) is only a sophomore, and this is her second trip to subsections,” Oliveira said. “With her experience from this year, she is really going to be a force to deal with over the next two seasons if she stays dedicated.”

Oliveira added that Delguidice has proven she’s a fast learner.

“Alex has basically gone from a brand-new golfer to a subsection qualifier in two years,” he said. “What an accomplishment.”
